The best candidates are structurally sound, measurable, reachable by appropriate equipment, transportable along a workable route, and headed to a prepared destination. A concern in one category does not always end the project, but it may require repair, preparation, a different method, or a decision not to move the shed.
1. Inspect the shed’s condition
A move places different forces on a building than normal use. Look at the base, floor, wall framing, corners, doors, and roof. Soft or rotten wood, heavy rust, separation at the corners, a sagging floor, or major water damage can make lifting and transport unsafe.
- Walk around all four sides and look for leaning or twisting.
- Check the floor from above and below where it is visible.
- Identify skids or runners and note cracks, rot, or modifications.
- Photograph previous repairs and any area that looks weak.
Only photograph the underside when it is safely visible. Leave lifting, support, and structural decisions to the people evaluating the move.
2. Measure the full exterior
Measure the widest, longest, and tallest points—not only the wall dimensions printed on a purchase receipt. Include roof overhang, vents, trim, skids, and attached features. Overall loaded dimensions influence equipment fit, clearance, route, and possible permits.
- Overall length, including runners or projecting attachments
- Overall width, including the full roof overhang
- Height from the lowest base point to the roof peak
- Porches, ramps, shelves, awnings, windows, or other projections
3. Trace an exit path through the property
Start at the shed and walk toward the street or loading area. Find the narrowest opening, tightest turn, steepest slope, and lowest overhead obstruction. Measure gate openings and side-yard clearance rather than estimating from a photo.
Pay special attention to fences, mature trees, eaves, air-conditioning equipment, retaining walls, irrigation, septic components, meters, service lines, and soft ground. Do the same exercise at the destination.
4. Consider whether it enters a public road
An on-property move is different from a move across Austin or Central Texas roads. Once loaded, the vehicle and structure must fit the route. Texas may require an oversize or overweight permit when legal size or weight limits are exceeded, and the approved route can matter.

5. Prepare a real destination
A workable move also needs a place to finish. Confirm property permission, final orientation, equipment approach, drainage, level support, and any setbacks, easements, utility clearances, HOA rules, or local requirements that affect placement.
Information to include in your first request
- Structure type, materials, approximate age, and current use
- Outside length, width, and height
- Pickup and destination addresses or general areas
- Whether the move stays on one property or uses public roads
- Known access concerns at both ends
- Desired timing and whether the destination base is ready
A provider may still need photos, exact measurements, or an on-site review before confirming that the shed can be moved.
